The disk image above is meant to be for apple laptops, but using that site's USB-as-bootabe-drive method, i think you can also install it to desktops easily enough (people in the comments section have done so). so i tried some other methods that involved Terminal, but then came back to the site above and re-read and tried their directions (with the added step between steps 6 & 7) I guess Apple are trying to heard everyone towards their newest OS - i'm not interested in new, i want stable).

but i wasn't able to open the disk image and update directly from the uncompressed disk, as I wasn't updating via the App Store (and the App Store doesnt show Mavericks as a download, or it didn't for me.

It then took a bit of trial and error, as i wasn't sure if the directions on the above website were necessary in my case (I was on a laptop, their disk image is for a laptop).

So here's where I found the disk image for Mac OS 10.9
Next up was to find the Mavericks installer (it's not available on the App Store. Get your Mac ready for Mavericks (OS X 10.9) | Macworld playing it safe, performing some first-aid on the system disk, backing up (using SuperDuper) and making sure the backup was bootable I started off following some advice from Macworld.

and as that was new enough to run the plug-ins I'm keen on, and also new enough to run Logic X, that's the OS version I wanted to make my way to (OS X 10.9.5, specifically)Īnd though it's not exactly what Apple wants (and they make it a bit difficult to do so), i have now successfully updated my Early 2011 Macbook Pro from OS 10.6.8 to OS 10.9 (Mavericks) using a bootable-USB-flash-disk (directions below) and then using the App Store to update to OS X 10.9.5 after a bit of reading, it seemed that several people generally agreed that OS Mavericks (OS X 10.9) has been one of the most stable versions of the OS X family, alongside OS 10.6.8 (which is what I ran for years, without any major problems). Hey hey, just thought i'd give an update.

I'm happy with the performance and stability of my set-up…. In the past, I've sometimes found updating the OS on a machine that isn't the most recent model can be detrimental to performance - the machine feels sluggish on the new OS. So between OS 10.8-10.11, can anyone recommend a particular release? Or advice to avoid a particular release?Īgain stability and performance are most important to me… (I intend to use this laptop for a live-set) I use it to produce and mix and record (Ableton)… my soundcard is a MOTU Ultralite Mk3įor the plug-ins to work, I need to update to at least OS 10.8 If it's of any relevance, the model I've got is an early 2011 Macbook Pro 8,2 quadcore "Core i7" 2.2 15". which is making me a little nervous (because I never update unless it's necessary - which means I'm now running OS 10.6.8 - which has been very reliable for me, hence why i've never updated) recently i've fallen in love with a few plug-ins and they're going to require me to update the OS to at least 10.8 …. It has been years since I've updated the OS on my Macbook.
